Global Money Week Seychelles 2023

Throughout Global Money Week 2023, the UN Youth Seychelles along with 9 partners reached 132 children and youth through several activities. The week kicked off with a virtual launch on Monday 20th, which featured a panelist reaction to topically questions. The discussion Topics included; “This year's theme is ‘Plan your money, plant your future’ What do you believe this theme means?”, “Given that we are now somewhat past the pandemic, why do you think financial literacy is such an important matter for young people”, “In your opinion is a more cash-less society more beneficial to individuals personal finance?”, “What would you say are the benefits of the activities organised in honour of GMW?”, “If you could advise our participants to take away something from this week, what would it be?”. Some noteworthy feedback from the participants reacting to what they appreciated; “It is important to write down your spending so as to get a visual representation of how my money is being spent”, “the workers and their hospitality, it was a great environment with very helpful and educational information provided”, “the better understanding of the role of an economist and what I require to be one has influenced my career goals”.

Global Money Week 2023 Essay Writing Competition - Won by Ella Wirtz!

Miss Ella Wirtz won the first Global Money Week Seychelles 2023 Essay Writing Competition. She received a R1500 gift voucher to be used at the Chanterelle bookshop. In addition to sponsoring the gift voucher, our partner H Savy Insurance added a few company tokens.
Ella's work was described as having great flow, structure and clear conveyed points of writing with well-balanced arguments, conclusions and language from all 3 Judges. She also included applicable context of financial security given as she also includes her own experience, which the Judges saw as a wonderful way of tackling the competition's requirement.

Global Money Week 2023 Poster Competition - Won by Omera Mathieu!


Miss Omera Mathieu won the first 
Global Money Week Seychelles 2023 Poster Competition. She received a R1500 gift voucher to be used at the Chanterelle bookshop. In addition to sponsoring the gift voucher, our partner H Savy Insurance added a few company gifts.

The judges concluded that Omera's poster reflected the theme of the poster competition very well, through the depiction of climbing your goals through saving a rupee a day. The 500 rupees note embraces the local context of Seychelles and shows a lot of thought went into it. Symbols like the books and money adds to demonstrating the theme clearly. As for the artistic flare, the coins effect on the continent is attractive and eye- catching while the painting/drawing skills are very apparent.

Financial Education Tour

​On Tuesday 21st March participants attended a physical workshop at H Savy Insurance (HSI), a leading insurance provider in the Seychelles. Student participants held group discussions, active learning sessions and learnt about what insurance is, its importance and learnt about its application to real life.

On the third day of Global Money Week 2023, participants were joined by the Central Bank of Seychelles (CBS) to learn more about the role the bank has in relation to the financial system. Participants received a presentation on the function of banks and how the financial system works nationally. Participants received a presentation followed by a tour of the banking hall. Participants were very interactive and interested, as they seized the opportunity to clarify their doubts through questions.

Seychelles Revenue Commission

On Thursday 23rd March a group of students went to the Seychelles Revenue Commission (SRC).  Participants were given an educational tour of the revenue commission including multiple discussions about taxes, its importance and how it operates within a wider economy from tax collection to the process of income distribution. The fourth day of GMW also featured a workshop organised by UN Youth Seychelles with s5 and s4 at the Anse Boileau secondary school. The workshop was a presentation from an economist, and it concentrated upon the necessary knowledge and tools required to faces the financial world. The presentation covered effective budgeting, financial products in Seychelles and how financial education can lead to wealth accumulation, especially from a youth perspective in Seychelles.

​On the fifth and final day of Global Money Week 2023, an educational presentation was organised by CBS. The presentation was given to the SITE students about budgeting. Questions such as what budgeting is, why do we budget and its importance, benefits and how-to budget were answered. CBS ensured to provide tips and solutions to counter any excuses student had to unnecessarily spend money. Students were engaging and participated actively in this financial tour. We also had the Central Bank that hosted the Piggy Bank Design Competition Award Ceremony. In addition, to the daily activities we also organised a writing and poster competition that kicked off a week before and the deadline for submission was Monday 27th of March.
