The UN Youth Assembly holds the Social Venture Sustainable development (SVSD) competition. This year, two of our delegates; Nathanielle Morel and Alvania Lawen were grouped in an African team, comprising of team members from Sierra Leone, Nigeria amd Ivory coast. The members produced a project and presentation entitled Goals 4 Girls within a few days.
Their project focuses on SDG 4; Quality education, SDG5; Gender equality, SDG 8; good jobs and economic growth. They plan to integrate this in Sierra Leone as girls there are deprived of quality tertiarry education and are prevented from being employed with the sole reason of being females. The team presented their idea as introducing internships and a community centre to train the Young girls in. The team presented their project alongside 16 other international teams ranging from countries like Brazil, America, Canada, Texas, Mexico, China, Dubai, Kenya, South africa etc. The prize giving presentation was held in Lenfell Hall, Fairleigh Dickinson University in New jersey. The team came out first and thus, Nathanielle Morel and Alvania Lawen became the first ever Seychellios to win the competition.
Ideation to Action Workshop
Ms Raghvi Naidu, Vice President of UN Youth Seychelles, attended an ideation workshop at the Youth Assembly in 2018. Here's a brief on Ideas to Action: "Ideas 4 Action, a joint initiative of the World Bank Group and Zucklin Center at the Wharton school promotes youth involvement in financing and implementing SDGs. The workshop UN Youth delegates attended focused on Design Thinking which is more effective than the conventional thought process. The thought process begins with the user followed by the problem and solution. Essentially, understanding the issue faced by the user, understanding the cause of the problem and finally creating a solution. "We were asked to work in groups and began by discussing various personal experiences on social issues. Subsequently, we chose one of the experiences to implement design thinking. The session was split into three segments whereby the first drill involved empathising with the user. The second drill was called ideating and this is where teams came up with possible ideas, given monetary and resource constraints as well as ideas independent of any constraints. Finally, prototyping involved coming up with solutions that encompasses the range of ideas obtained in the prior stage.
This was truly an insight in solving problems in a seemingly simple way, yet which was unknown prior to the workshop. Design thinking will now be incorporated in as many facets going forward." Wondering what kind of workshops UN Youth Delegates attend at the Youth Assembly.
